A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, causing more than 200 deaths and leaving hundreds injured, thousands of families displaced, and many people missing under the rubble.

This comes at a time when the new far-right government is actively trying to crush the struggles for people’s power and the dignity of the peoples.

Popular response to disasters
From Hurricane Katrine in the U.S. in 2005, to the floods in Durban in 2022 and in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 2024, to Storm Kristin earlier this year in central Portugal, these events remind us that protecting communities and ensuring collective care is only possible through organized grassroots responses.
