Popular Sit-In at the Airport

Together, we will disrupt the peak flight schedule on June 1st, 2025.

Lisbon Airport is the 8th busiest airport in Europe is the most polluting infrastructure in the country.

The last few years have been the hottest on record. In 2024, we watched in horror and anguish climate catastrophes that not only resemble war zones—they are war zones. We know that burning fossil fuels, which fuel the massive profits of corporations, creates carbon bombs that devastate lives worldwide. Governments and companies refuse to change course, recklessly speeding toward collapse and dragging us along. We can’t just sit on the couch and accept the end of the world—we need to rise up and challenge their rules.

Lisbon Airport is the clearest example of this devastating war in Portugal: the 8th busiest airport in Europe is the most polluting infrastructure in the country; it caters an industry that is one of the pillars of the global fossil system and the pinnacle of climate injustice, serving mainly to the world’s wealthiest while mirroring the touristification that is making the city unlivable. Its planned expansion, aimed at doubling the number of passengers landing in Lisbon, has been the crown jewel of successive Governments. Politicians who paint themselves green but lead the race for airport expansion, are themselves executing the ongoing attacks on everyone’s lives.

Another World is Possible

To avoid the worst effects of climate collapse, we need to drastically reduce flight volumes over the next 5 years, ensuring the downsizing of commercial, military, and commercial aviation. Ultra-short flights, like Lisbon-Porto, and private jets, have no place in the world we live in: these are unnecessary flights that can be eliminated overnight. Alongside, we must imagine and build a world free of fossil fuels and airplanes, developing clean and fair mobility solutions like railways and free electrified public transport for everyone, and we should also build a society more rooted in the land and with more free time, so we can travel at a slower pace.

Airports are war weapons aimed at the present and future of everyone

But their expansion and the continuation of flights that are killing us are not inevitabilities: history tells us that it’s possible, through the power and unity of the people, to stand up to seemingly untouchable forces and change the course of history. On June 1, we need you and all your friends and family to join us in saying “No” to new emission-heavy projects and to outline the necessary path to stop planes and establish free, electrified, and accessible public transport for everyone. Join us as we go by public transport from Alameda to the Airport, where we will peacefully and creatively sit down to disrupt peak flight times, challenging the notion that the fossil system is untouchable.

Without you, we can’t safeguard our present and future and build a different world.

We will only succeed in interrupting the normal operation of the airport if many people join us, including you. That’s the one thing we can guarantee: alone, we won’t do it — only together. When ordinary people come together in solidarity and bravery, they can create great change. Today, it’s our turn to make history. Come and show your strength!
