It’s the summer of 2026, and it promises to be hellish. The climate crisis is worse than predictions indicated, and barbarism, already present in many places in the world, is spreading rapidly. Storms and wildfires; a progressively more terrifying future for modern-day generations and the real and growing possibility of an inexistent future for young people; prohibitive costs of essential goods; the escalation of wars, genocides, and an unmasked, more aggressive fossil imperialism in search of more fossil fuels; a suffocating heat in homes, schools, and workplaces. Each day, the number of people affected by the attacks happening as part of the war declared by governments and corporations against society and the planet, through the climate crisis, increases.

Wildfires and storms are currently reported by the media and political power as war scenarios, but in perverse terms. Kristin was
reported as the result of the climate crisis, but never do they mention who is to blame for this. When the “war scenario” was
described, they rendered invisible the agency of those who provoked the war by exploiting fossil fuels and perpetuating infrastructures and a highly emitting system dependent on fossil fuels. This way, political and economic leaders try to normalise the extreme climate events, that they have long known would happen as a consequence of their activities, so that they can continue with those same activities.

It is necessary, then, to repeat: the climate crisis cannot be normalised; it is an act of extreme violence with guilty parties –
governments and big corporations that, through coordinated and premeditated actions, brought us here – that impose climate chaos as the only option. We know that they won’t stop by themselves, but we also know that it is possible to stop them and end this war, avoiding the destruction of everything we love. This responsibility is with common people.

On our side, the past 9 months have been marked by experimentation, moments of enthusiasm, and a constant frustration.
We did everything we could and what we could do was little. Given the escalation of the climate crisis, the absence of cuts in emissions, and the lack of a base and qualitative jumps in the movement’s power and capacities, today we are facing reality: the movement is not only not closer to winning, but it can also be further away from that.

The political turn to the Right and the increased audacity of the far-right have also been frightening and contributing to movements’ stunning. In the current and global moment of social disorganisation, we know that we must discover innovative, realistic, and more ambitious responses than ever, while trying to deal with the precarity and repression of our everyday life.

We must qualitatively transform the current struggle context and the movement’s power to face an escalating reality. It would be
dishonest of us if we would say that we are certain of what we are doing. Nonetheless, we must experiment and test promising paths, at the same time that we want to build a grassroots movement, continuing the work we have done in the past year.

Therefore, in the next months we will:

Make the war visible

The war declared by governments and corporations against society and the planet through the climate crisis expresses itself in more and more violent and constant ways. We will benefit from the publication of the “Quebrar em Caso de Emergência Climática” book to open honest discussions about this war.

We want to take the book and its proposal to more people and more places, challenging society to take responsibility and act in accordance with the state in which we are.

Build a movement of war frontlines

Even though we know that all ordinary people are today, to different degrees, are already being affected by the climate crisis, we
recognise various frontlines of this war. In this context, we will continue to support the struggle and organisation of two of the main frontlines that we consider to have a large capacity to generate further fight and solidarity in society: on the one hand, students and young people in Lisbon who are fighting for the end of fossil fuels; and, on the other hand, communities living in the territories affected by wildfires. We will, for that reason, continue our organisational and solidarity efforts with people in wildfire-affected territories, as well as support the student movement in organising students and young people to end fossil.

Integrating the International Movement of Communities Affected by Dams and the Climate Crisis, we want to build a movement of peopleaffected by the climate crisis that organise themselves to act together, capable of mobilising more people to fight and act in solidarity. During the next year, we will build a movement of people affected by wildfires in Portugal. We will offer capacity to empower affected people, facilitate knowledge exchange, and support the articulation between local struggles and demands emerging from those struggles, allowing for narrative cohesion and national coherence that pushes the movement forward.

We will equally prepare ourselves to, whenever other attacks of the climate crisis are extremely visible, mobilise society in solidarity, in popular defence of territories, and against the ones guilty for this war.

We will, on a regular basis, collaborate with student-led social mobilisation movements in the fight for the existence of a future,
giving visibility to how “the climate chaos is a war and war is climate chaos” and supporting resistance and opposition to fossil
imperialism.

Honest, aware, and agile in the face of the volatile reality of this war

Having little time to dismantle this war means that we have to use the time we have in the smartest way possible. This implies
abandoning the comfort of “doing something”, of “filling ourselves with tasks”, or “doing what we know how to do”. Instead, we need to maintain ourselves focused in doing what is needed and building plans that effectively allow us to win.

Thus, we take on the challenge and commitment that, in the next 6 months, we will be agile and flexible to reality. We will be aware of opportunities to build the social movement and we will be present with capacities whenever relevant social, political, and climate events happen. We will allocate capacity to explore various paths and opportunities to build power and effectively stop the war. We will share what we have found.

We continue to face with seriousness and commitment the need to build an international movement. Thus, we will remain aware of new experiences and learning outcomes of other collectives and movements, and we will remain open to proposals for articulation and coordination spaces that appear as attempts to advance the construction of an international movement more capable and anchored in the urgency and task of dismantling this war system.

Reality scares us. We witness thousands of people around the world being affected by the climate crisis in more and more brutal ways.
We find strength and the duty to continue our task in their fight for resistance, in the bodies placed in front of the sources and
infrastructures of the attacks, in the efforts for international solidarity and community mutual aid, and in the immense efforts to construct popular power. We have no alternative other than continue fighting, firm, together, with ambition and honesty.
