This Sunday at 11 a.m., four Climáximo supporters were arrested by the PSP after just 20 minutes on a “climate resistance” slow march in Calçada do Combro in Lisbon. The aim was to “alert society to stop consenting to this system”.
This morning at 11 a.m., a group of four Climáximo supporters, aged between 19 and 49, held a slow march of “climate resistance” that disrupted the normal flow of traffic. One of them held a banner that read “The climate crisis is genocide,” explaining that he had to be there because “I’m a father and a worker, and we can’t continue to agree with this system”. After only 20 minutes of marching, and despite being duly notified, the four supporters were arrested by the PSP.
“Society can no longer tolerate the crimes of governments and companies that knowingly and continuously condemn us to death through the expansion of the fossil industry”, says Maria Mesquita, spokesperson for the action. This week it was announced that Galp has received several million euros for the discovery of a new oil well in Namibia. This is unacceptable, it’s an attack on the lives of all of us. We can no longer accept this system in which companies and governments have declared war on the planet and society.
When asked if the actions would continue, Maria said, “We recognize in the actions of governments and corporations a declaration of war on life, and it is a war to which we do not consent. We know that we are living in a historical period and that only popular resistance can stop the climate collapse we are heading towards. We are doing what must be done. Society, all of us, must go into resistance. We won’t stop until we stop them.”
This action comes in the same week that eleven Climáximo supporters are on trial for a political protest on the eve of the 50th anniversary of April 25. Yesterday, Saturday, two Climáximo supporters were also arrested for marching through the Sapadores neighborhood in Lisbon, despite the huge support that was generally felt by locals and tourists in the streets they passed through, with some people even joining the march.
The collective calls on all people who do not want to give their consent to the “war on life” to join the climate resistance.
