Advertising posters in downtown Lisbon have been replaced by Climáximo supporters, as part of the Week of International Action against airline advertising, sponsorship and greenwashing. The action aimed to denounce the fossil industry as an industry of collapse, and the new airport as a project of death.
Today Lisbon woke up to a dozen billboards at the Cais do Sodré and Praça da Figueira bus stops replaced by posters reading: “Public space free of fossil fuels”, “More airports: journeys to climate collapse”, “New destination: direct flight to climate chaos” and “End to fossil fuel advertising”. Climáximo supporters demand an immediate halt to all unnecessary flights, particularly Lisbon – Porto; a halt to all advertising and sponsorship that legitimizes the fossil market in all public spaces; a drastic reduction in the aviation industry; and the cancellation of the new airport, as it is a project, like any project that increases emissions, of death and climate collapse.
Climáximo was one of more than 30 European groups taking part in this week of international action by the Stay Grounded and Badvertising campaign against “airline advertising, sponsorship and greenwashing” and for the immediate degrowth of the aviation industry.
Leonor Canadas, spokesperson for Climáximo states that “the government and companies in Portugal and around the world continue to profit from the climate crisis, plan new projects to kill us, and try to deceive people by greenwashing their products. They do this despite knowing that their actions are condemning millions of people to death and misery every year. While they get away with their crimes against humanity, those who fight for life and peacefully resist the destruction of everything that matters will, on the eve of April 25, be tried and possibly sentenced to 1 year in prison.”
On April 22, 23 and 24, Climáximo will organize “Assembleias de Abril” (April Assemblies) at the Campus da Justiça in Lisbon, in solidarity with the 11 Climáximo supporters who will stand trial, but also to discuss how to continue resisting for the life, freedom and democracy that governments and companies are attacking.
