Climate justice collective says “these results confirm what we already knew: entrusting our lives to this Parliament is suicide”. A “popular sit-in” is scheduled for June 1st at Lisbon airport.
Climáximo, a climate justice collective, reacted this morning to the election results with a call for “immediate climate resistance”. For Climáximo, the election night results, which showed a defeat for the parliamentary left and a sharp rise in the far-right, “are a clear signal to all people who know that it is necessary to stop the climate and social collapse that this system was built to fail and that it is necessary to enter into climate resistance now”.
The group, which had presented an analysis of all parties’ programmes in comparison with the Disarmament and Peace Plan, had already stated that “entrusting our lives to the ballot box is suicide”. Matilde, spokesperson, explains: “With five years to pull the emergency brake to avoid falling into the climate abyss, no party has presented any electoral programme compatible with the limits and safety barriers set by science. No party has committed to carbon neutrality and the end of the fossil fuel economy by 2030. All parties consent to the construction of a new airport and, above all, all prefer to protect the current absurd status quo rather than transform everything while we still can, for a fair life for all and a habitable planet”.
In a statement, Climáximo says that “these election results should serve to make us, ordinary people, abandon once and for all any hope that the system will solve the climate crisis and social crises. We must be the ones to build popular power. Only the people will save the people”.
A popular sit-in is scheduled for June 1st at Lisbon airport to “stop the climate crisis and for free public transport for all”, with the meeting point at 3 pm at Alameda D. Afonso Henriques. For the spokesperson, the importance of this protest at this moment in what is Portugal’s most polluting infrastructure is to “demonstrate that only popular power, with our own hands, will stop the climate crisis, overthrow fascism, and build a fair and habitable planet for all people”.
